Let's Pantomime - to review Past Simple and Past Progressive
Activating pupils is better than doing 'fill-in-the-blanks-with-the-correct-tense-of-the-verb-in-brackets exercises, wouldn't you agree ? Pantomime can do that !
Make cards - or better yet- have the pupils make cards (two cards each, one of each kind) :
Cards with verbs in V1 of short actions ( for example: wake up, open the window, sneeze , etc..)
and cards with verbs in V1 with long actions ( for example: read the newspaper, snore loudly, swim, etc..).
The actions should be actions which will be easy for the pupils to act out in pantomime.
Put all the short action cards face-down on one side of the desk and all the long action cards face-down on the other side of the desk. Invite two volunteers at a time: one picks a short action card, the other picks a long action card. (Another option is to put all the cards on the desk face-down WITHOUT separating them.) The two pupils mime the actions and the rest of the pupils have to describe what they saw :
For example: Dan was swimming when Ruth (suddenly) sneezed.
or- Ben opened the window while Shira was snoring loudly.
Make sure to include some silly actions... to make grammar-practice more lively !

Pupils Work, Teacher Rests - We all play !
Pupils Work, Teacher Rests - We all play !
Do you remember the chapter about games in Take Action ( 7th grade book) ?
Here's a priceless opportunity for you to rest a bit !
Ask the pupils to team up in groups or 3 ( or 4 ).
Their task: Plan and prepare a game for the whole class to play.
For several lessons we just played : Treasure Hunt ( twice ), Pass the Parcel, Trivia, 'What do the words have in common'-Quiz, Blind Cow and more.
The Trivia Quiz was intelligent and scientific.
The Treasure Hunt sent us running all over school ( me included). One clue sent us to a "Fortune Teller". Another clue sent us to play a game where we had to stand on sheets of paper (size A4) without falling ( otherwise we'd 'drown at sea' ) and move to 'shore' by squeezing together onto several sheets of paper, picking up the sheet of paper at the end of the line and putting it on the ground closer to 'shore'.
Jumping in big trash bags ( the plastic version of potato bags) was also one of the games.
I couldn't have been so creative even if I wanted to.
They did the work, I rested (and ran, too) and we all had a great time !

Bingo Time !
Dear fellow teachers,
Do you ever get bored in class ? Do your pupils ?
Games is the answer: indoors, outdoors, whatever is allowed in your school.
Here are a few ideas:
Bingo - to review basic sentence structure
Draw a 3 x 3 bingo board . ( You may sing the song Bingo while doing it. So what if it's about Bingo the dog ? ) Ask the pupils to draw the same in their notebooks.
Write down the words to place in their bingo board ( don't tell them the purpose of the game yet ).
The words are: I , He , You , have, has , am , is , are , smart , a pet , sitting .
Ask them to choose 9 words from this list of 1 words and write them on their bingo board in whichever order they choose.
After they have written down the words, explain how they 'get a bingo' : Tick the words the teacher says. If you have a straight line ( left to right, right to left , up-down , down-up , diagonal down or diagonal up) which forms a sentence ( a grammatical one ), that's a bingo.
Elicit examples from your pupils: I have a pet ; He has a pet ; You are smart ; I am sitting ( etc. )
It's up to you to decide if you will accept the sentence 'I am a pet'.
Say the words one by one. Be ready for the ear-splitting Indian war cry: Bingo !
( Some candy in your bag to reward winners, and losers, is a good idea, too. )
Have fun !
